Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, also known as Sai Zhenzhu, is an American and lived in Zhenjiang with her parents when she was 3 months old in 1892. In her life time, June 26, 1892 – March 6, 1973, she spent totally 37 years in China including nearly 20 years in Zhenjiang City of Jiangsu Province.

Pearl was raised in Zhenjiang and was tutored by a Confucian scholar named Mr. Kung. Her mother taught and tutored her English as a second language. She was a productive American sinologist and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1932, and William Dean Howells Medal in 1935. She became the first American woman in 1938 to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces”. There is no irony that she has been described in China as a Chinese writer.

During the chaotic Chinese Cultural Revolution, Mrs Pearl S. Buck had been blamed as the “Cultural Enemy”. Before her death in 1973, her request for a visa to visit China was finally refused. Now over 30 years later, she is eventually acknowledged for her role not only opening up Chinese culture to an ignorant West, but as an accurate documenter of rural Chinese life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her books with such emphathy and compassion were the first time to undoubtely affect the attitudes of American and the world toward Chinese people with sympathy and positive views.

Pearl died of lung cancer on March 6, 1973 in Danby, Vermont in the United States and was interred in Green Hills Farm. She designed her own tombstone, which does not record her name in English: instead, the grave marker is inscribed with Chinese Characters representing the name Pearl Sydenstricker. In her final life, she wrote, “people asked me, ‘Are you going back to China?’ I reply, “I belong to China, as a child, as a young girl, as a women, until I die.’”

Historical sites for Mrs Pearl S. Buck in Zhenjing includes: Pearl S. Buck Former Residence and it was Buck’s childhood residence where she lived with her family for nearly 20 years. This house was a nondescript Western style house in the city’s rural outskirts at the time. The local government renovated the old house in 1992 and opened it to the public, declaring the residence a historic landmark. In 2004, it unveiled a monument to Buck and renamed a city park “Pearl Square” in her honor.

Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Association is an non-profitable organization that devotes to research and cooperation with other international organizations such as Pearl S. Buck International.
