Located on the southern bank of Yangtze River, Baohua Mountain is 437 meters high, with well protected natural atmosphere. The mountain has a convenient access to the Shanghai–Nanjing Expressway and the National Highway 312 and it is 30 km from Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Jurong.
The mountain was named based on both a bush species that flourishes with yellow flowers, blooming in full range of the mountain in spring, and the well-known Buddhist monk, Bao Zhi, who preached and died on the mountain.
The natural atmosphere of the mountain is well protected by the local government. There are many plant and animal species that you can only find here in this mountain, including a few rare species of bamboos and orchids (Magnolia). The mountain was approved as a provincial nature conservation area in 1981, a national forest park in 1996 and a national 4-AAAA tourist attraction in 2003.
The mountain has become well known not just for its natural beauty but also for a Buddhist temple, Longchang Temple that is one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries. The temple was established 1,500 years ago and has been a great Buddhism teaching facility since then. Many famous personages, including the Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, visited here and left numerous historical relics behind. |
